Join vintage 2-stroke enthusiasts for a 2-day regional race!

Required

Vintage 2-stroke scooter. This means no Stellas. Sorry. It also means no PXs. Sorry. If, however, you are travelling down with a registered race member who has a qualifying scooter and you wish to participate in the ride e-mail AirborneVespa at msgarrett at gmail dot com with your status/sob story. A determination will be made on a case-by-case basis. You will not be able to register for the race, your time will not count, you will not receive a patch or t-shirt. You will not be able to buy a patch or t-shirt (if I even have those). You will register for the rally. Space for non-qualifying scooterists who are travelling WITH a qualifying scooterist is on a first-come, first-served basis and is up to the judgement of the committee (that means me). Do not show up the day before the race with your spouse and a sob story and expect to ride with us on your Vespa PX150 unless you have received confirmation from me first.

Qualifying example: Person A is driving a truck from Oklahoma with a Lambretta TV175. Person B is riding with Person A and has a Stella. I will not say that Person B cannot ride in the race. Person B will have to register for the DC Rally. Person A will register for the race and receive a complimentary Rally Registration.

Non-qualifying example: Person A is coming from Baltimore with a 1978 P200. Person B is a friend of Person A and wants to ride in the race on a Vespa PX150. Person B will not be allowed to follow the route, will not be issued a map, and will receive much derision for not following the rules. It's Baltimore. You can ride down for the rally.

Fact is this is pretty much a builder's event and a hard-ass event. It was born out of the original Scooter Cannonballs of 2004, 2006, and 2008 and it was decided we needed a smaller, less-time-consuming event to test ourselves and our machines. If you want to race a Stella for 1000 miles, create your own event.

There are no divisions nor classes other than "Scooter." A stock Li is in the same class as a kitted P225 monster, or a Lambretta outfitted with an RD350 motor. The great equalizer will be the route, the gas, and how long you can sit on your scoot. The P225 has no real advantage over the Li other than to get to a stoplight a little quicker.

There will be no GPS devices allowed during the event. I realize many of you have phones that have GPS enabled. If you are caught using a GPS you will be disqualified from the event and you will forfeit your rally patch and/or t-shirt and any other swag.

Full directions will be made available 3 days prior to the start of the event if you are registered. If you do not pre-register but will register on-site you must e-mail me ahead of time for the directions. Do not ask for directions before 3 days out (unless you are driving and will be on the road at that time - e-mail me if so). Some of you will notice there is a route publicized on WMASA. So what? It's changing. Surprise! You will be responsible for creating your maps from these directions in whatever format (non-GPS) you wish: sheets of paper, 3x5 cards, written on your arm, etc. You will be expected to adhere to the publicized route. There will be opportunities for you to cheat and get on interstates. If discovered you will be disqualified from the event. You will forfeit any patches, t-shirts, or other swag. If you get lost you will be expected to get back on the route without cutting off miles and miles by taking a shorter route.

Day 1, Start: Washington, DC area, 7 am, 3 June, 2010.
End: Somewhere not in DC, when you get in, 3 June 2010.
Day 2, Start: Somewhere not in DC, 7 am, 4 June 2010.
Finish: Washington, DC, whenever you get in, 4 June 2010.

There will be one mandatory stop on the evening of 3 June. It will be in a pre-determined hotel and you will be notified once arrangements are made. You will have to register at the hotel on your own time and at your own expense. I do not care if you put 12 people in a room. Fine with me if it is fine with the hotel. The hotel I am thinking of has a restaurant for dinner and breakfast.

The race will begin on Friday at some time near 7 am. You will be disqualified if you leave before the announced time.

All racers will have their time start at the same time both days. If time begins at 6 am and your scooter doesn't start until 7 am, your TIME still began at 6 am. You just lost an hour. There are not going to be people on-hand to make sure you start on time or keep track of your time - we all start at the same time. We finish when we get in.

Time will stop on Thursday when you arrive at the hotel. Time will stop on Friday when you arrive at the finish line.

Support Vehicles

As of this time there is no dedicated support vehicle. You can make arrangement with other scooterists to have a support vehicle follow and charge people however you wish. Please note that you will never be more than 2-3 hours from DC or Richmond or other city centers. Persons in these areas who can pick you up will be identified and their information provided.
